Evesham Under-9s taste success on tour May 1-4

Evesham Rugby Club's Under-9s enjoyed a hugely successful tour to Dorset. A total of 17 boys headed to the South coast and returned with a collection of bumps, bruises, medals and memories.

On the pitch the tour began on a distinctly chilly Saturday morning with three matches at Dorchester Rugby Club's festival against two Dorchester sides and another touring side - South Gower in Wales. The Asum boys gave an excellent account of themselves, winning all 3 games. Jonathan Flaxman picked up the man of the match award for an outstanding tackling stint, especially against South Gower.

On Sunday it was down to the main business of the tour, a tournament at Wimborne Minster. Having entered two teams the youngsters roared each other on to victory in both the cup and plate competitions. The Evesham Chimps topped their group, racking up 25 tries and conceding just 3. A semi-final win saw them into the cup final against the best of 3 Wimborne teams. Some heroic tackling and support play saw them edge a victory by 2 tries to 1. After a heavy defeat to Wimborne's cup runners-up in their opening match, Evesham Baboons made it to the plate play-off, where Luke Jones ran riot to score a hatful of tries to secure victory. He deservedly picked up the Baboon's player of the tournament award, while Ethan Corbett's sportsmanship and positive attitude won him the Chimps award.

The tour was an outstanding success both on and off the pitch and the boys had a great time.
