Evesham U10 welcomed Upton Rugby Club on Sunday, both clubs fielding 2 equal teams in perfect conditions for rugby.
Evesham Blues were up first against Upton 1 – both teams showed pace and appetite with a growing understanding of the new rules this year. Strong running and good support play resulted in 6 tries for Evesham Blues, Upton pressure was also rewarded with a well deserved try.
Evesham Maroons then played Upton 2 – keen to keep the momentum, Maroons continued where the Blues left off, competing at the breakdown and showing some creative running to cross the Upton try line 6 times, only resilient defence prevented a determined Upton side from scoring in reply.
Maroons stayed on to face Upton 1 in game 3. A gritty encounter this time, some excellent tackling from both sides and with the ball moving through the hands well, an enjoyable spectacle ended 5 tries to 2 in Maroons favour.
In the last match of the day Evesham Blues met Upton 2. Continuing the theme of the day, both sides treated the spectators to some flowing attacking rugby and structured defence, the game concluded 6 tries to Evesham Blues without reply.
Across the 4 games Evesham try scorers were Tom Merrell (5), Will Brett (4), Jake Hopkins (3), Archie Johnson (2), Ollie Wycherley (2), Tom Stone (2), Will Gilderson (1), Andrew Smithson (1), Ollie Neal (1), Jack Witherford (1) and opening his account for the season Tom Davis (1). Encouraging to see such strength in depth with 11 individuals crossing the whitewash this week, it does not tell the whole story however as it was only possible through a strenuous team effort from all involved. Jordie Wright, Hamish Cross and James Hoare were noteworthy for tackles made.
It was particularly pleasing for all the coaches to see the sportsmanship displayed by all 4 teams who showed each other and the referee the utmost respect.
Evesham Man of the Match was Josh Tipping-Lane.
